Southwest Link Bus Depot Design, Development and Delivery
Project Introduction
TK Business Group is proud to have delivered the new Temporary Marrickville Bus Depot for U-Go Mobility to operate Southwest Link rail replacement bus services. With only eight weeks to plan and a further eight weeks to establish the site as an operational bus depot, TK Business Group in collaboration with the client’s Head Contractor is proud to have delivered the facility for day one of operations with resounding praise from client U-Go Mobility and Transport for NSW.
Project Background
The T3 Sydenham to Bankstown rail line is currently closed for Sydney Metro upgrade works. During the closure, Southwest Link replacement bus services will operate three routes in lieu of train services. Bus operator U-Go Mobility is operating the ‘SW2’ route and required a temporary bus depot to be established in Marrickville to provide for delivery of the SW2 route service.
Program Scope
TK Business Group was engaged by bus operator U-Go Mobility to design, develop and manage the construction of the Temporary Marrickville Bus Depot.
The scope included:
- Designing the layout of the bus depot including bus parking, car parking, bus re-fuelling (both diesel and adblue), bus washing, bus maintenance and office and restroom facilities.
- Undertaking the design of all office, lunch and restroom facilities including layout and fitout requirements suitable for an operational bus depot.
- Undertaking all the necessary services locating and survey works to incorporate into the design.
- Obtaining the necessary Dangerous Goods reports and various approvals to install a diesel fuel tank onsite.
- Obtaining the necessary Fire Services, and Emergency Lighting approvals for the site.
- Undertaking the design of a Retaining Wall for the site.
- Undertaking the design of a compliant walkway structure and ensuring the site and the various facilities are compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
- Researching and procuring required assets including demountables, fuel tanks, bus wash equipment, yard lighting, site fencing
- Identification of pavement rectification works required and management of design. Including both flexible and ridge pavements.
- Identification of stormwater management solution for the site.
- Nominating security measures for the site.
- Undertaking swept path analysis and traffic impact assessment.
- Undertaking luminance assessment to ensure adequate yard lighting.
- Provision of utilities to the site including power, water and telecommunications. Including obtaining all the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities.
- Preparation and drafting of site plans.
- Overseeing construction works by the Head Contractor and addressing Request For Information requests.
- Commissioning and handover of the site to the Client.
Project Challenges and Project Highlights
Site access for the purpose of establishing the now-operational site as a bus depot was only granted eight weeks prior to commencement of Southwest Link rail-replacement bus services. An extensive program of work needed to be completed within this condensed timeframe, including substantial ground preparation works to ready the site for heavy vehicle usage. Although the project timeline was challenging, working collaboratively onsite with the Head Contractor to deliver the project on time was a highlight.
